log cabin renovation questions!

I have seen so many talented folks answer others questions and so here I go!

I want a rustic but MODERN feel to this 1959 original log cabin. We are in the process of purchasing and decisions are starting to loom. Here are my thoughts.

1. Replace flooring with light, weathered oak, large planks.

2. Modify kitchen in taking out protruding L shaped counter, add a nice hood vent, a little more counter space between fridge and range, remove shutter blinds. Replace countertops with concrete countertops.

3. Paint interior walls a dark gray with milk paint, so that grain still shows.

4. Furnish with modern style, West Elm ish, lots of rugs.

What do ya'll think? I'm getting pushback from my husband, who declares painting tongue and groove is a sin. I want a cozy, modern feel. Am I crazy to want to paint the walls? Dark? There are a few photos that I've really responded to and they are all darker in feel and tone. I do not want to whitewash everything.

But then again, I'm doubting myself. Ideas are so appreciated.

With all that warm-colored wood, will a dark gray be your best choice? Gray often tends to be very cool. Plus, it won't exactly lighten things up (which seems to be a big goal for most people). If it were me, I would live with the space for a little while befor making a decision. You may find that you have different ideas about what to change after you have lived there a little while.

Are you sure it is a log cabin, and not a cabin with log siding? Because I would expect the inside facing structural walls to be log, not t&g.

I would remove the t&g and sheetrock and paint off white. I would replace the cabinet doors with plain maple shaker doors w/o knots and paint all the cabs off-white.

Then I would install pine floors, in keeping with the trim and ceiling. Then I would replace all the light fixtures with black "iron" light fixtures. Door hardware too.

Bonjour, Je suis de votre avis, le sol est sympa et peut rester en place. Pour donner un côté plus moderne à votre salle de bain , vous pouvez l'associer avec des galets (photo 1)et des grands carreaux crèmes ou blancs mis à l'horizontal (photo 2). Question pratique, les carreaux jusqu'en haut c'est très bien (niveau nettoyage). Pour les meubles, vous pourriez partir sur un style teck (photo 3). Pour la douche, il semble y avoir de la place sur le mur de gauche (par rapport à la fenêtre), vous pourriez donc opter pour un bac plus grand (90*120) et une paroi en façade(photo 4). Pour le bac, il faut voir pour les évacuations si vous pouvez mettre en bac type douche à l'italienne mais souvent, en réno, il faut passer sur des bacs extra plats (à recouvrir de galets ou en résine ou en grès). Pour la baignoire, vous devriez penser à une baignoire avec des "coins" arrondis pour donner plus de douceur et recouvert elle aussi de carrelage ou de galets (pour le teck, c'est possible mais ce n'est pas le même budget). Bonjour Julien, Je viens de parcourir votre dilemme et je me permets de vous donner mon avis. Le projet de votre architecte me semble très bien, mais je mets un gros bémol sur la taille du salon. Je vois conseillerais de demander une projection en 3d à ras le sol du rendu de l'espace depuis votre canapé pour vous faire une meilleure idée. Caser une chambre à coucher dans 24m2 me semble un peu "illusoire". A mon avis si vous mettez le système de canapé escamotable suggéré par Florence dans le mur du fond (à l'emplacement du lit face à fenêtre) vous aurez un espace de vie bien plus aéré. Sinon je me permets de vous suggérer aussi une astuce pour accéder aux meubles hauts de la cuisine. Chez moi le cuisiniste m'a proposé d'intégrer un escabeau dans une plinthe et c'est très pratique car ça évite de stocker un escabeau ou de prendre une chaise pour accéder aux rangements en hauteur. Je ne sais pas où est placé le Lave linge dans votre plan, mais je vous montre ce qui a été fait dans un petit F2 (32m2) que je viens de rénover. En fait il est intégré dans une armoire et placé sous le frigo. La plinthe est amovible et fixée avec du velcro pour accéder à la vidange. Ou on peut aussi le faire avec un aimant. Pour gagner du rangement il y a un demi-four à chaleur tournante combiné avec micro-onde. C'est top car ça permet de caser poêles et casseroles en dessous. Bémol, le prix.... Mais si ça rentre dans le budget c'est top. La petite salle de douche ouvre dans la cuisine, sur la gauche après l'armoire on n'avait pas d'autre choix mais dans un si petit espace on doit forcément faire quelques concessions. Personnellement ça le gêne moyennement dans un petit espace oú on vit seul ou à deux. La salle de douche est minuscule (0,90x2,67) mais le rendu est top. Entre les conseils de l'architecte et des houzzers, tout a été pensé en fonction de la petite taille. Le meuble vasque (60x37cms) laisse suffisamment de place pour le passage. Coucou Florence, j'ai découvert un super site pour marériaux de construction, isolation, carrelage, fournitures de salles de bain, fournitures de chauffage, outillage etc. Ce sont des produits neufs invendus ou en surplus revendus à prix imbattables par des Pros dans toutes les régions de France. Une houzzeuse a ainsi acheté un pare douche qui valait 600€ pour 181€ http://www.destockage-habitat.com Il y a de super plans et il fait aller chercher le matériel en principe. Cela peut certainement être utile pour ton studio. Gros bisous et bon week-end.

ap clairet Merci ! Nous (du moins le plâtrier) avons raillé et plaqué. Placo de 10mm oui.Pour la finition le long des poutres, c'est du MAP (il me semble, une sorte de plâtre un peu pâteux) mis soigneusement à la "spatule" (je ne sais pas si c'est le terme exact) ensuite ponçage à la main, soigneusement également, pour enlever les quelques surplus, puis peinture.

I would not put wood floors in this house. You should actually be looking to minimize all the wood. I agree with janedoe to paint off white, but you don't have to go through the trouble of tearing out the T&G. I have seen it painted and it provides a wonderful texture while updating the space. The only thing you will want to make sure you use something like Kilz or Zinzer primer so any knots wouldn't show through. I would just replace the doors of the cabinet and reface the frames to what ever wood you would want. Don't paint the walls charcoal gray! it will look very cave-like, and it already looks like it might be dark, what with the overhang of the porch and the dark stones on the fireplace.

Better yet, if your husband and you can't agree on what to do with this house maybe you should keep looking at more houses?

Thank you so much for the comments and suggestions! I think we will wait on the paint and see how replacing the flooring and modifying the kitchen helps with all the brown. :) We are going with a light vinyl plank for the floors, so I'm really hoping that breaks it up a bit. Also going more modern with the furnishings. It really is in the PERFECT location, so we are moving forward on it. :)

Doesn't feel or look like a log cabin to me more like a boy scout cabin. The ceiling seems too low and way, way too much wood. You could spend upwards of 50,000 in that one room alone. A lot to consider before purchasing.

Raquel, check out my ideabooks. I have a 1950 chestnut log cabin and had to do a ton of inside work (everything was 1980's). Just awful. You can strike a happy balance and I will be happy to answer any questions. :)

Victor, love the log cabin, WOW! This house has a lot of knotty pine. I think I would paint the kitchen cabinets, get better lighting in the place and then live with it for a while.

Do a natural ledgerstone along the outside facing areas of the base cabinets. It will break things up. I did that as well with mine.

It's beautiful!!! I have a 200 year old log cabin that has the horse hair insulation. go to Simonsondesignstudios.com and we can draw in 3D so you can see how it will look before you do anything! with logs its tricky and it will eliminate mistakes that may or may not be able to be corrected

This cabin doesn't look very very old, so IMO the you could do whatever you like w/the walls. I wouldn't favor dark grey. I like all the wood - with cool furniture & rugs, it could look modern. Agree the rug needs to go.

Agree w/your kitchen ideas. Would put in slate or soapstone counters to get the black feel. That with very modern furniture would let you see how it feels before painting the walls/ceiling. Or you could just paint the ceiling & see how that feels.
