Help, Living area layout

Hi,

We are just renovating our house and I am struggling to decide the layout of our living area. We have not bought any furniture yet as we don't know where to place the tv and sofas. The main entrance opens to this living area and then this one is connected to the kitchen, so not sure what the best furniture arrangement would suit the space. Space will be painted in off white and wooden floors will be added.

I was kind of thinking to have an inbuilt long tv unit on the wall next to the french doors and then place an arrangement of sofas in front of the window facing the tv, but not sure if the sofas would look too far from the tv and secondly, I am concerned that you will be crossing this space and walking across the tv while people might be looking at it. Pretty much I thinking about doing the opposite from the photo uploaded as this was the place when it was for sale. Any recommendations or suggestions would be appreciated.

The challenge that you have is that the room is long and skinny, and if you limit yourself to furnishing to the end walls the sofa is always going to be too far from the TV, and there will always be traffic between the sofa and TV.

A better solution would be to have the TV in the same position as your sale photo, and bring the sofa forward by 1.5 metres off the wall, and closer to the TV. Use a narrow sofa table behind the sofa with a pair of table lamps (do the wiring before you install the timber floor), so that the walkway to the french doors to the family is behind the sofa, and not in front.

By not placing furniture against walls gives a more luxurious feel, will allow a better viewing of your TV, and be a nicer proportion.

I agree with bringing the sofa forward, closer to start of the patio window. If you are going to have more than one sofa, maybe have the other placed in front of the entrance way, but facing patio window, and as Dr Retro mentioned a sofa table/unit behind the sofa, making it a feature point from the main entrance.

The sofas would be placed in an L shape giving you a warmer cozier feel to the TV area.

A narrow hall way table/unit on the wall were the sofa is currently sitting in the photo you supplied Even a mirror on the wall above table for a formal touch, as it will also be seen from the main entrance.

We have a main entrance that opens up onto our two main living areas, so it took a bit of experimenting and rearranging our furniture till we settled on a practical layout, but at the sometime still having that entrance way feel to the home.

I see your point, It does look ugly :) Since its a rental apartment, do you have the authorization to remove it ? Because unfortunately, you can't put down vinyle over lino, it will not work (and its not because of the uneven floor). You can remove the lino and put another one, less ugly. It can be nice actually :) http://designmag.fr/design-dinterieur/lino-sol.html You are speaking about sticker, its quite cheap, why not trying and see if it fits with an uneven floor ? Although Im not sure that it will look pretty. Last solution, you can paint the lino, it will not last forever but it could be nice. Ask for expert advice to by the appropriate painting pots.

Thanks, indeed. A rug would be an option, but our 2 small kids eat like pigs... This option is for later :0) Does anybody have an idea that fits our minimalistic style? We are not fan of "busy" spaces. Is there any technical solution? Sth we could stick under the table or a trick, magical plants perhaps?

bonjour, ils sont très bien les rideaux que vous avez trouvé, le bleu est bien clair et dans les tons pastels que nous utilisions beaucoup en Scandinavie. Le bleu assortie pour le coussin est parfait. Si vous souhaitez vous rapprocher du style Scandinave il faut choisir entre rideaux et voilage comme on ne mets jamais le deux, beaucoup trop lourd pour nous intérieurs ou on essaye toujours garder une luminosité maximale. En Tunisie vous avez le problème contraire donc il faudra s'adapter et trouver une équilibre entre le style Scandinave et vous besoins. Si vous souhaitez avoir une voilage je conseillerai vivement un blanc uni, sans rayure! votre tableau bleu et jaune sera très bien avec l'ensemble, il est très beau!

Ces derniers sont meilleure en finition et juste la couleur qui me reste a chosir. c'est du parquet imitation bois made in spain.

Once you move in experiment with chairs and boxes for dimensions that suit you to get right traffic flow from entry to kitchen and tv and window then buy furniture to suit that sizing. Like idea of two couches in L shape. You may even be able to make a reading nook in that corner of the room where plant currently is

Put your tv on the wall that backs onto bed 1. Place a L shape couch facing the tv starting at the the little bit of wall in from of the patio door and the longer part facing the tv. Place a large rug under the couch and towards the tv to create the living space. Turn the small space behind the couch into a mud room with a bench and hooks. Or a small reading area with the arm chairs, a rug and a small coffee table.
