Hillside House
The end result may look like a simple light floating cantilevered fireplace mantle however looks are deceiving. The mantle is a solid single piece of 4" maple, that weighed about 80 -100 lbs.
This fireplace was a continuation of the old brick Kitchen fireplace wall. You can see how the concrete contractor wrapped the wall in concrete to give us this elegant result.
I designed, engineered and created the Cantilever Mantle you see here, there are 4 -15" steel 5/8" rods that were epoxied into the old brick wall at a12 degree downward bore, and the Mantle was bored at the opposing angle which created a perfectly level mantle when installed, however the strength of the cantilever was increased 10 fold.
