Matter Design & Make Pty LtdIn 2019, Interior designer Alexandra Brown approached Matter to design and make cabinetry for this penthouse apartment. The brief was to create a rich and opulent space, featuring a favoured smoked oak veneer. We looked to the Art Deco inspired features of the building and referenced its curved corners and newly installed aged brass detailing in our design.
We combined the smoked oak veneer with cambia ash cladding in the kitchen and bar areas to complement the green and brown quartzite stone surfaces chosen by Alex perfectly. We then designed custom brass handles, shelving and a large-framed mirror as a centrepiece for the bar, all crafted impeccably by our friends at JN Custom Metal.
Functionality and sustainability were the focus of our design, with hard-wearing charcoal Abet Laminati drawers and door fronts in the kitchen with custom J pull handles, Grass Nova ProScala drawers and Osmo oiled veneer that can be easily reconditioned over time.

Barefoot DwellingPhase 2 of our Modern Cottage project was the complete renovation of a small, impractical kitchen and dining nook. The client asked for a fresh, bright kitchen with natural light, a pop of color, and clean modern lines. The resulting kitchen features all of the above and incorporates fun details such as a scallop tile backsplash behind the range and artisan touches such as a custom walnut island and floating shelves; a custom metal range hood and hand-made lighting. This kitchen is all that the client asked for and more!

The quartz counter is waterfalled off both ends of the island which eliminated the need for false doors. The waterfall provides the illusion that it is holding up the overhang that is the bar. However, there is a functional pullout cabinet on either end of the island as well that allows access to the cabinets under the bar without requiring the bar stools to be moved out of the way. The middle cabinets under the bar do require the bar stools to be moved for access so only rarely needed kitchen supplies are stored there.
The main appliance stack has a Bosch Speed Oven at the top which is both a microwave and convection oven with broiler. In the middle there is a oven with left swing door and a warming drawer at the bottom. This arrangement puts the oven at a nice height for accessing heavy dishes such as the Thanksgiving turkey and the swing door provides unobstructed entry.
Decor Kitchens & BathroomsTwo tone kitchens are a great way to enhance the space you have and lets you be creative. The Fjord green is a beautiful colour that brings a fresh, airy feel to the kitchen, whilst the wooden grain of the island is warm and comforting. This combination is like bringing the outdoors in!
Along the wall we used a compact laminate worktop. A great worktop that is 100% water proof and super easy to install. Being a compact laminate, it allows undermounted sinks to be installed.
The bank of tall units are impressive with the Neff appliances. The ovens and combi oven are at the perfect height and are in a great position opposite the island. Under the combi oven in the middle is the warming drawer. Great for keeping plates warm and also keeps the symmetry of the design.
