Design FocusThis small penthouse apartment was given a wonderful nook space by creating a half moon glass bar height table perched above the cooktop island, supported with standoffs and a custom 'cigarette' base of wenge veneer. Custom swivel barstools with nickel footrests top off the fabulous spot, with swarovski crystal pendants creating both light and a bit of glamour above.

Tierney Conner ArchitectureThis historic Piedmont home is reimagined by relocating the kitchen to the center of the home and by opening it to the previously disconnected rear yard through elegant light-filled doors. Soft gray tones throughout the house set the backdrop for a vibrant green tile wall that speaks to the newly planted yard. Minimal light fixtures, floating metal shelves, and an interactive faucet infuse the space with modern touches. Informal seating for the family of three is neatly tucked into the extended countertops.

MDB Design GroupRemodel of an early 1960’s Santa Monica, California kitchen was designed to capture a timeless, yet functional space. The first thing to tackle was the spatial relationships to make the kitchen more functional for this small family. The existing refrigerator was moved to the adjacent wall and surrounded by the utility closet and pantry, creating a built-in look. This allowed us to build one long countertop and create a “furniture hutch” look on one wall. The base cabinet houses the trash/recycle bin on the left and the litter box is concealed in the right end cabinet.
Choosing a free standing range and a microwave that is built-in, in an upper cabinet, created more countertop space on the cooking wall. The sink was kept on the diagonal in the corner so that the shelf behind it can be used to display art pieces. The Saarinen marble table is the centerpiece for an area that is wrapped with a medium turquoise painted bead board wainscot. New molded wood chairs complete the look.
The serene colors of white, light turquoise and dark brown are timeless, while the stainless appliances, hardware and pendant light fixture add some sparkle. The white cabinets are warmed by the rich chocolate tone of the large porcelain tile floor. The sleek countertops are a toast-colored Caesarstone, selected for durability and ease of use. Glass subway tiles keep the backsplash subtle and contribute to the kitchen’s warm, casual feel.
Beautiful Habitat: Design & DecorationThis kitchen has zones for the whole family to be together, but engaging in different activities. The extended island offers ample prep space on the kitchen side and adequate seating on the living room side. Eliminating wall cabinets and combining storage into tall cabinets means everything is accessible to family members without tripping over each other in the food prep zone.
The wood slat dividers are a nod to mid-century modern, but appropriate for 21st century living. The wood slats create a barrier to the dining room, while allowing light from the large front windows.

Nearly every room of this lovely Noe Valley home had been thoughtfully expanded and remodeled through its 120 years, short of the kitchen.
Through this kitchen remodel, our clients wanted to remove the barrier between the kitchen and the family room and increase usability and storage for their growing family.
DESIGN SOLUTION
The kitchen design included modification to a load-bearing wall, which allowed for the seamless integration of the family room into the kitchen and the addition of seating at the peninsula.
The kitchen layout changed considerably by incorporating the classic “triangle” (sink, range, and refrigerator), allowing for more efficient use of space.
The unique and wonderful use of color in this kitchen makes it a classic – form, and function that will be fashionable for generations to come.
