Since the back yard is at the end of a short alley, the privacy fence is essential to completing the coziness factor. It serves to block the view of the driveway, alley and the neighbor’s yards and vehicles. The homeowners liked the lattice on the old fence so the gate has that carry-over feature which allows them to see through to the driveway plus gives the gate a little character. The top of the fence is meant to mimic the pattern of the top of the windows at the back of the house. The stucco columns in the fence, on either side of the gate and down that side of the yard, tie into the house using the same stucco finish and the Indiana limestone caps on the columns match the caps on top of the upper terrace and the window sills.

Looking from the decking at the rear of the house across the wild lawn. With the changing of the seasons comes new colour and interest. As the perennial plants mature after being grown from seed, new species come into flower each year. Adding interest as time goes by.

Garden design and landscaping Amersham. This beautiful home in Amersham needed a garden to match. Karl stepped in to offer a complete garden design for both front and back gardens. Once the design was approved Karl and his team were also asked to carry out the landscaping works. With a large space to cover Karl chose to use mass planting to help create new zones within the garden. This planting was also key to getting lots of colours spread throughout the spaces. In these new zones, Karl was able to use more structural materials to make the spaces more defined as well as private. These structural elements include raised Millboard composite decking which also forms a large bench. This creates a secluded entertaining zone within a large bespoke Technowood black pergola. Within the planting specification, Karl allowed for a wide range of trees. Here is a flavour of the trees and a taste of the flowering shrubs… Acer – Bloodgood, Fireglow, Saccharinum for its rapid growth and palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ (one of my favourites). Cercis candensis ‘Forest Pansy’ Cornus contraversa ‘Variegata’, ‘China Girl’, ‘Venus’ (Hybrid). Magnolia grandiflora ‘Goliath’ Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ Viburnum bodnantensa ‘Dawn’, Dentatum ‘Blue Muffin’ (350 Kgs plus), Opulus ‘Roseum’ Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’Hermine’ You will notice in the planting scheme there are various large rocks. These are weathered limestone rocks from CED. We intentionally planted Soleirolia soleirolii and ferns around them to encourage more moss to grow on them. A contemporary garden for a family in South London. The planting is naturalistic and wildlife friendly, softening the sharp geometry employed in the hard landscaping. Seen here in summer with the echinacea, echinops and kniphofia in full bloom.

Backyard makeover. Building on existing elements (Palm trees) we removed a lot of outgrown and outdated material and freshened up the patio borders with colorful canna's, various bromeliads, Alocasia California, and a fresh layer of mulch and landscape pebbles. Landscape boulders break up the lines and specimen Bromeliads provide touches of interest.

Most lap siding is installed in even rows, but we felt that would be too harsh for this home. The aesthetic of Craftsman architecture was a response to the Industrial Revolution, emphasizing traditional, handmade craftsmanship. We felt we could preserve the Craftsman spirit by installing the siding in a pattern that feels organic--both randomly structured and completely cohesive at the same time. We used various sizes of James Hardie cement siding to help mimic the natural sediment layers of earth.
