This fountain is a great addition to a front yard entry. Clean and simple with a subtle water noise for visual and auditory interest. The fountain is surrounded by boxwood hedges, Mexican Beach cobble, and white precast concrete.

This contemporary Boerum Hill, Brooklyn backyard features an ipe fence, bluestone patio, artificial turf lawn, and a neatly lined up row of hornbeam trees. Artificial turf has come a long way in recent years and is much more realistic looking than it used to be. Read more about this garden on my blog, www.amberfreda.com.

Stepping stones in a minimal gravel paved area lead past two lounge chairs to the intimate dining area. The herringbone-patterned limestone patio dissipates into a lush planting bed filled with loose swaths of shade-loving perennials and seasonal bulbs. Beech hedging, and formal clipped evergreens, surround the space and provide privacy, structure and winter interest to the garden. On axis to the main interior living space of the home, the fountain, is the focal point of the garden. A limestone water wall featuring an engraved pattern of fallen Honey Locust leaves nods to the centrally located mature Honey Locust tree that anchors the garden. Water, flowing down the wall, falls a short distance into a pool with a submerged limestone panel. The light noise of the falling water helps soften the sounds of the bustling downtown neighbourhood, creating a tranquil back drop for living and entertaining.

This homeowner had a very limited space to work with and they were worried it wouldn’t be possible to install a water feature in their yard at all! They were willing to settle for a small fountain when they called us, but we assured them we were up for this challenge in building them their dream waterscape at a larger scale than they could even imagine. We turned this steep hill and retaining wall into their own personal secret garden. We constructed a waterfall that looked like the home was built around and existed naturally in nature. Our experts in waterfall building and masonry were able to ensure the retaining wall continued to do it’s job of holding up the hillside and keeping this waterfall in place for a lifetime to come.

Wolf residence (two years after installation) from sidewalk view. Custom concrete lawn pads (small) create walkway from drive to front door in a way that will not make a pathway in the turf as a result of foot traffic. While they appear to be flowers, this is actually Snow in Summer Jasmine (groundcover) which has small white and pink leaves that look like a flower from afar but are very hearty. Terraced look to the shrubs in the bed against the house.

The pergola in the same style as the new veranda (pilot project for www.tooptuinhuisjes.nl) helps link the back section with the rest, as do the repeating benches. The planting is used to fill the space inbetween that winds organically around the structures. The paving is mostly crushed shells with alternating sizes of Schellevis pavers in the patio areas. The sunken trampoline and the room for sleep overs in the veranda make the garden extra popular with the kids in the neighborhood.

The design brief for this project was to bring order to chaos. Just 13 metres from the end of the extension to the hedge at the back but with a rise of 4 metres. Obviously the slope was a major issue and there were going to be a lot of walls. Rather than use traditional masonry we thought that steel gabions filled with a local sandstone would give a different, more organic feel. As this garden is also supporting the garden of the next property the gabions provide the necessary structural support without having to use several tonnes of concrete. We also installed planting bags within the gabion stone so that walls will be softened with greenery. The gabion walls were very hard work. On top of the excavation we brought in 48 tonnes of stone to fill them. Due to limited access this was all done by hand. As well as the walls we needed lots of steps and oak sleepers fit the bill here. The lower patio was extended and the middle section is where the hot tub goes. Rather than the usual wooden shelter for the hot tub we used a detachable shade sail. The sails come in many colours and can be changed to suit the mood. The garden was to be low maintenance but we still managed to fit a few plants into the scheme and pots will eventually provide a bit more interest. To finish things off a small amount of lighting to give just the right mood at night.

The design brief was to create a landscape that was harmonious with the existing bush landscape that reflected the natural colours and textures of the property and wider landscape. The design is a contemporary native garden with a series of passive usable spaces which connect to the main alfresco area, pool & spa.
