Amber Freda Garden DesignThis Brooklyn Heights townhouse backyard features a bluestone patio and custom-built ipe wood planter boxes. The quiet, Zen-like backyard is shaded by surrounding buildings, so we picked a shade-tolerant mix of dogwoods, rose-of-sharons, rhododendrons, and Japanese andromedas to plant here. It features a bench carved from a tree trunk. When choosing plants that will do well in shade, I find it's generally helpful to think about the types of plants that do well in a woodland environment. Add color, texture and warmth to your small spaces - or drama to a large space - with a well-designed container. Birdbaths, fountains, troughs and more make great containers. Irrigation can be run to your containers or Oyas (water vessels) can be planted in the containers to provide irrigation and to keep your plants healthy.
Yorkshire GardensWithin this garden we wanted to create a space which was not only on numerous levels, but also had various points of interest. This garden is on a slope, but is also very wide.
Firstly, we broke up the space by using rustic sleepers to create several raised beds,as well as steps which lead to differennt zones. This helps to give the garden a more traditional, country edge.
The sleepers were also used to create a winding path through out the garden, marrying together the various areas. The path leads up to the impressive sunburst pergola and circular stone patio. This is the perfect spot to view the whole garden.
At the other end of the garden another pergola sits amougnst a bustling flower bed, and will be used to train vining flowers.
Along the back wall of the garden a raised bed is home to a stunning display of wildflower. This plot is not only a fabulous riot of colour and full of rustic charm, but it also attracts a whole host of insects and animals. While wildflowers looks great they are also very low maintenance.
Mixed gravel has been used to create a variety of texture. This surface is intermittently dotted with colour with lemon thyme, red hot pokers and foxgloves.
Stone has been used to create a warm and welcoming patio area. Flower beds at the front of the garden can be used for veg and other leafy plants.
Overall we have created a country style with a very contemporary twist through the use of gravel, modern shape and structural landscaping.

Patrick L. Boyd-LoydThis seventies-modern Mansard roofed house was floating in a sea of concrete and needed to be anchored to the site.
The clients called upon designer Patrick L. Boyd-Lloyd, with David Rolston Landscape Architects, to help soften the harsh front yard that's only plantings were a formal edge of Cotoneaster glauca.
A large section of the circular driveway, that read as a small landing strip, was removed, leaving a generous walkway and a new entry auto-court delineated by tall grasses. The Hard-scape material is Exposed Aggregate and Sandblasted Concrete.
A simple, modern plant palette reflects the character of the house: Blue blooming Vitex trees and White Oak Leaf Hydrangeas add summer color, while Black Bamboo casts shadows on the pristine stucco walls, with wispy Ornamental Miscanthus Grass adding a slightly formal delineation. Contemporary Wok bowls, a Rolston signature accent, are used for spare accents of seasonal color.

Ravenscourt Landscaping and Design LLCOn the side yard that people rarely use we put a herb and veg garden using 2' x 6' watering troughs set up on cinder blocks.
