Coming up with new ideas is always challenging, but the challenge seems even more difficult to overcome when the starting point is quite limiting. In the case of this residential project, the starting point was an existing foundation, that needed to be used for the future building. Therefore, the footprint of the house needed to remain the same, however, the functions needed adjustments since the requirements and priorities of the owners changed in the previous years. Another aspect that involved limitations but in a totally different sense was the setting - a beautiful place near a lake, surrounded by wild vegetation - and our challenge was to integrate the house while emphasizing the view. We managed to do so by using large glass areas towards the lake, by laying the house properly on the sloped ground and by the use of materials. Because we didn't want to interfere with the all-natural vibe of the surroundings, we preferred using all-natural materials: wood as a structural material as well as an interior and exterior wall finishing, natural stone on both façades and pavements, ceramic roofing. The result now peacefully lays near the lake, a discrete presence, while hosting the life of a family and all the peace of mind one can get.

Most older homes had a special entry foyer to hang coats, or leave shoes and umbrellas before entering the living area. One of the previous owners removed the original foyer wall and doorway. The open look wasn't terrible, but looked very cheap, and not well thought out. We felt this little old house needed its special little entryway back. We extended the wall back out to somewhat separate the living room from the entryway, but didn't make the door opening as small as it used to be. Just enough to add separation. After we finished adding the wall back in, it looked nicer not to see the front door, the coat rack, and the entryway table and seating. The hand made iron chandelier was saved from a curbside brush collection! We rescued it, re-wired and hung it in it's deserving location. The foyer became its own special space to set down the mail, take off the shoes and come inside our house. Photo Credit: San Antonio Board of Realtors/ Sunny Harris

Beautiful reclaimed Parefeuille tiles from the Provence region in France. These reclaimed French terracotta tiles were originally used as ceiling and subroofing tiles in traditional farm houses in Mediterranean France. The tiles were laid in between oak rafters and served as ceiling and a strong sublayer for the roof tiles to be mounted above. Vintage Elements reclaims these tiles and uses them for flooring and ceiling tiles. Although not often used as an outdoor flooring tiles, these reclaimed terracotta tiles will easily withstand moderate climates with light freezes. Their warm colors with nuances of pink, salmon, sand and red will instantly provide Mediterranean charm which can't be achieved with other flooring materials. Vintage Elements recommends yearly sealing to protect these tiles. Please don't hesitate to contact us at www.vintageelements.com for more installation instructions, sealing products and care tips.
