UserOur basement serves as the main storage area for our tiny house, a playroom for our son, a media room, and a guest room whenever we have friends in town. The Tillary sofas (from West Elm) are each the size of a twin bed, so when pushed together with the back cushions removed, they make a King sized bed. We used Ikea wall cabinets, hung 1" off the floor in the back of the room for additional storage. We then built a wooden waterfall countertop around them. It is stained with minwax Kona to match the Ikea Besta media center on the other wall.

Rochman Design-Build Inc.Our clients in Ann Arbor Hills were ready to turn their unfinished, yet highly used, basement into a space that they will love. Done with spending so much time exercising, playing, or just storing things in such a space, they were ready to elevate their love of home, including a love for their basement. The Rochman Design Build team converted this 1700 sq. ft. area into a beautiful and functional basement that includes a kitchenette for Fall Game Days, an exercise gym, and a wide open family and play space for growing teens and their friends.

Innovative Design BuildThis full basement renovation included adding a mudroom area, media room, a bedroom, a full bathroom, a game room, a kitchen, a gym and a beautiful custom wine cellar. Our clients are a family that is growing, and with a new baby, they wanted a comfortable place for family to stay when they visited, as well as space to spend time themselves. They also wanted an area that was easy to access from the pool for entertaining, grabbing snacks and using a new full pool bath.We never treat a basement as a second-class area of the house. Wood beams, customized details, moldings, built-ins, beadboard and wainscoting give the lower level main-floor style. There’s just as much custom millwork as you’d see in the formal spaces upstairs. We’re especially proud of the wine cellar, the media built-ins, the customized details on the island, the custom cubbies in the mudroom and the relaxing flow throughout the entire space.

Drab to Fab DecoratingWhen we started this project there were 3 lights, red carpet, and fake panel doors where the built-in bookcases are now. This home is an old historic home so it was important to update the space for their kids and guests to come and stay as well as try to make the space appear bigger then it actually was. I went with whitewashed flooring, beautiful tables that were distressed with a white & grey finish. Kept the colors neutral but added a pop of blue. We built the bookshelves so that they could have storage for games and art, the sofa also serves as a sleeper. The desk with mirror above help reflect the light and also allow them to work down there. Client was so thrilled!!
Kathleen Ramsey, Allied ASIDOriginally the client wanted to put the TV on one wall and the awesome fireplace on another AND have lots of seating for guests. We made the TV/Fireplace a focal point and put the biggest sectional we could in there.
