Distinctly different gardens reading as a harmonious whole-was our mission!
The owners had defined ten distinctly different gardens to be installed across the almost three-acre site. How were these to be woven together into a cohesive whole, which in turn would compliment the Italianate façade of the 10,000 square foot house?
The gardens rendered as a string of pearls -- Each of the ten gardens was separately designed to be its own special jewel. And yet, when viewed from afar or from the grand terrace above, several of the gardens and numerous garden elements are "Linked Together as a String of Pearls" -- the White Garden, the Christmas Tree (a large deodar underplanted with white foliaged "snow"), the Theater Garden, the Perennial Border (mandated by the coastal commission to protect the bluff top from failing), the Koi pond, the Queen's Garden, the Pergola and the Herb Garden all flow in a loose chain around the perimeter of a central back lawn. This design concept drove many of the other design decisions and specific design techniques.

Pacific Garden DesignAfter living with the original 1980s landscaping for a few years after purchasing their home, these homeowners were ready for an update. We preserved mature plantings where possible, but integrated new material to better suit the homeowners' style and the Northwest setting.
The rural location made deer fencing critical for the vegetable garden. The homeowners commissioned the gate from a local metal artist.

Levy Art + ArchitectureA fire set the stage for this intervention on an old family home. Set on 200 acres of Vineyard, all that was salvageable was the old gable roofed above the bedrooms and the riverrock hearth. We began with the gable and combined it with a series of sloped and flat planes. The new roof forms provide for clerestory windows that bring abundant natural light to the space. A flat, wooden ceiling over the living area continues outside seamlessly housing the surrounding porch. The long flat eave opens the view across the vineyard, to the coastal range and provides the ideal location for an integrated solar array. Bands of salvaged cedar at the base of the house support climbing wisteria, binding the house to the landscape as it rises from the vine rows.

Seattle Urban Farm CompanyWe worked with the owner of this Mercer Island home to completely transform his large, shady backyard and unproductive vegetable garden into a sunny productive space. The new extensive annual vegetable garden features deep raised beds, wide pathways, small production greenhouse, a tool shed, rain garden and patio for entertaining.
The site will also includes native plantings, cut-flower garden and a small farm stand that the owner will stock with the extra bounty from his garden.

Nicholas Walker and his team worked in conjunction with his brother Malcolm to create a stunning series of Belgian Blue Stone terraces and pathways to connect the diverse sections of the property and integrate the indoor and outdoor living experience.
They designed a sheltered cactus oasis, organic culinary garden and an intimate Ipe observation deck as virtual rooms linked by the elegant stone pathways and framed by the sea.
