JAMES DIXON ARCHITECT PCA former summer camp, this site came with a unique set of challenges. An existing 1200 square foot cabin was perched on the shore of Thorndike Pond, well within the current required setbacks. Three additional outbuildings were part of the property, each of them small and non-conforming. By limiting reconstruction to the existing footprints we were able to gain planning consent to rebuild each structure. A full second story added much needed space to the main house. Two of the outbuildings have been rebuilt to accommodate guests, maintaining the spirit of the original camp. Black stained exteriors help the buildings blend into the landscape.
The project was a collaboration with Spazio Rosso Interior Design.

Carlton EdwardsThe master suite pulls from this dark bronze pallet. A custom stain was created from the exterior. The exterior mossy bronze-green on the window sashes and shutters was the inspiration for the stain. The walls and ceilings are planks and then for a calming and soothing effect, custom window treatments that are in a dark bronze velvet were added. In the master bath, it feels like an enclosed sleeping porch, The vanity is placed in front of the windows so there is a view out to the lake when getting ready each morning. Custom brass framed mirrors hang over the windows. The vanity is an updated design with random width and depth planks. The hardware is brass and bone. The countertop is lagos azul limestone.
Quarry MillThis natural stone veneer fireplace is made with the Quarry Mill's Torrington thin stone veneer. Torrington natural stone veneer is a rustic low height ledgestone. The stones showcase a beautiful depth of color within each individual piece which creates stunning visual interest and character on large- and small-scale projects. The pieces range in color from shades of brown, rust, black, deep blue and light grey. The rustic feel of Torrington complements residences such as a Northwoods lake house or a mountain lodge. The smaller pieces of thin stone veneer can be installed with a mortar joint between them or drystacked with a tight fit installation. With a drystack installation, increases in both the mason’s time and waste factor should be figured in.
