Need help designing remodeled Open Concept

NEW remodeled room, Tore down wall opened up room, removed old yellow cabinets and trim, along with red paint. But I have NO IDEA HOW TO DECORATE AN OPEN CONCEPT..In need of everything. Have to get curtains, New furniture, decorations, bar stools, and solid surface countertops. I don't know how to make it "flow" with design and colors. I'm so overwhelmed I don't know where to start. how do I set up "zones" and make it all flow so it doesn't look weird?
I had hoped to hire an Interior designer, but I'm far from rich and running out of money after both myself and now my husband diagnosis of Cancer has drained our account with medical bills...
So, I'm hoping my Houzz friends can help me with the design and layout of this room which is 12 x 18.
There will be a 36" TV Between the 2 small windows, maybe on a shelf? Plz help me design, I am overwhelmed. Thankyou!!!

Whew - doing this without furniture, or being there may be tricky but maybe this will help get you started.

Find a 9'x12', colorful and well patterned rug that you love. For me, purchasing a rug after you've bought the furnishings, can be really tough. The rug will instantly pull a conversation/family room together. Make sure the fronts of the furniture are placed onto the rug. You probably need a sofa, and 2 chairs - or sofa, loveseat, and 1 chair. I like to add pattern & texture with the rug, so keep your furniture pretty neutral. It's also easier to replace a rug down the road than it is 3 pcs of furniture. Place the sofa with it's back to the kitchen - make sure there is walking space behind the sofa, and between it and the barstools. Place either chair in the corners by the tv wall - don't push them all the way against the walls. Float them a little - this allows for room to decorate the walls with shelving, and/or art. If you have the space, add some tables to the ends of the sofa, and by the chairs. I suggest getting creative with these tables. They do not need to match, or be all the same. "Find" cool little accent pcs at your favorite shops, or antique malls. Add lighting, the wall decor,, and you have a fun new space!

I have a very well built set of furniture my Father made - so for the emotional reasons I will not give it up. Then comes the BUT - it is pale and made out of solid birch with absolutely beautiful flaming, swirling type of wood - and I love dark almost black, black and some grey for my furniture. I like silver over gold, latter of which I will not accept. It is crime to paint wood - generally speaking especially when it is beautiful - and so I will not do. The set of furniture includes a bit over 3 m long very near ceiling height book selves with center area designed for the TV and a stereo.. electronics. It has its own lights. There is section with led-glass and other with wood doors - some open shelves. Down there is a bit larger base with drawers. Then there exists an additional extension which can also be set else where in a room. There is 1 sqm large a coffee table high enough to work as a laptop table with structural design and a hidden base compartment for a home safe (how ever not good for permanent work table - no way). I designed the table top for it and made it when I was a teen. The design includes glass cover. In addition I have a nicely sized, bit larger than usually lamp table with 3 drawers. I designed the legs for that - so they are not common type while still simple. They are more narrow at the ends than at the top. They have silver handles and traditional framed centers for the doors. The pale birch of the doors in this particular object found online is exactly what my birch is like - tone included... I like the black legs on that. I do like Art Deco - but something about this object just does not work. I need more options and ideas. This might be just the first and most important piece of furniture to get because... I prefer much more things like these.. Please help me to find that small, but not too small a piece that can unite well enough dark and the existing pale birch. Thank you.

J'aime beaucoup le veinage de la pierre dans le projet de cuisine salle à manger dans véranda îlot à Bourron-Marlotte. Très bonne idée d'avoir ajouté un matériau "vibrant" à un aménagement de cuisine principalement composé de tons unis ! Les couleurs, claires et chaudes, font du bien !

Ces derniers sont meilleure en finition et juste la couleur qui me reste a chosir. c'est du parquet imitation bois made in spain.

Mimi, Start with figuring out what you want to do in the space. Is a comfy lounge chair a must? Will you be reading, playing games, entertaining 10 people? Then create an idea book that has furniture and accessories that you love and use that help you figure out your personal style. Your home should reflect your lifestyle and the things that you love and nobody on Houzz can tell you what that is.

I have tons of idea books, but honestly it gets overwhelming. Again, colors have to flow into the kitchen. We will use this space for everything, entertaining, watching TV, cooking. It will be more of an "adult" space. We have a downstairs Tv room my kids hang out in..should curtains match the furniture? Or throw pillows? Idk where to begin, and what to keep neutral and what item to make colors "pop"

Terpbb, just a follower ! If this were my room I would use the sofa facing the T.V. Wall
This would define more of foyer feeling, then two good size chairs in front of picture window with a table and lamp. This will keep the view open from the kitchen that you took the wall down to get. As far as colors etc. the second designer is right go for one thing you love and everything will follow. Have fun with this!

Mimi you've done an excellent job with updating/modernizing the layout. I feel you, I've done all my own updating to save money, due to also not being rich. I did end up hiring a designer briefly to help me with an issue I created when painting my open floor plan one color, which ended up being totally wrong for my kitchen.

She was surprisingly very helpful in not just solving my main issue, but helping with different design decisions throughout my condo. Some designers can be hired for an hour or two or just one afternoon, so it doesn't have to break the bank or be as costly as you might think. If you think of it this way, it's truly an invaluable service when you have a lot of different design decisions to make and run the chance of making costly and time consuming mistakes.

Starting with a complete blank slate may seem easy, but you may find that getting full design help online with lots of different people chiming in may become even more confusing and frustrating, than having just one person presenting a cohesive design. That is, unless you can provide solid pieces you are contemplating and someone could rearrange them in your room to give you a better idea of what you want, and what it will look like in the end.

Maybe make a list of all your requirement for the room, such as room seating and usage. You have some really good idea books already created. Is the problem just connecting the living room ideas with the kitchen?

Thankyou Stephd for your response. Yes my biggest challenge is making sure the colors flow, and not look like 1 big jumbled mess...I would never go into a remodel the way I did this one. Make sure TO PLAN PLAN PLAN!!!!! I literally was tired of my small kitchen and took a hammer to a partial wall to make an open space and I just hated the outside of my home and needed the inside to be a place I loved. I had just got done fighting Stage 4 Lymphoma Cancer that had metastasized to my bones. My neighbors-2 families-with 6 kids total- our 3 homes were a backyard triangle..we loved them like family, well they literally turned their back on us. I had chemotherapy for 10 months and my only chance of cure was a stem cell transplant which required a 1month hospital stay. When I returned home, every time me and the kids went outside all the families and the children would go inside I was very sick but I tried to call them and talk to them but they would just ignore us, The hardest part was my kids asking me"Mommy why won't anyone play with me anymore" Anyways I wanted my inside of my home to be a place of solace a place that I loved and I wish I would have planned more because I thought I would just tear down the wall add a few cabinets, flooring but it turns out maple changes color over the years so I had to start over I absolutely love the dark floors the gray walls and the white cabinets but this remodel has turned out to be financially way more than we ever planned, and Time consuming!! I lost my job of 18 years, I have a son going to college in 3years, and have tons of bills. So don't enter into a remodel lightly. This has been extremely time and financially consuming, we have to get all new furniture because ironically I had 2 cats that were not declawed and both just passed of the same cancer as me..weird I know..so, getting back to the question is YES I need it to flow correctly with color and furniture. I have to get countertops, solid surface, something soft..prob white, curtain rods and curtains new bat
R stools and furniture. I'm trying to use the Houzz part that lets you use a pic and put the furniture in it, but haven't figured out I will keep trying to try and save on a decorator. Thanks and sorry I know this isn't a psych board, I just want people to understand what they are getting into!!
