house front revamp

I'm tackling the front of my house soon. Thid is the estate agent photo but in fact the window and door surrounds had been overpainted really badly in a horrible shade of apricot by the time I bought it last year. The paint is flaking, lots is splashed on the brickwork and the bay window stone cills are crumbling in places . The front door is cracked ( it's in the kind of area where youths kick the front door. For kicks apparently). The pavement starts about a foot in front of the front of the bay. There are no railings and the concrete path and frontage are cracked/crumbling.
I need the surrounds and woodwork at the top painting, the cills repairing, paint splashes on bricks removing, railings, a gate and a new door. I'd also like to remove the concrete frontage and grow bay trees in front of my windows, directly into the ground as pots might be stolen. I'd also like to install a ( veery short) victorian style tiled garden path.
So... assuming I go for cream coloured cills/ surrounds and a black railing, what colour shall I do the door and what tiles shall I use?
I'm drawn to bubblegum pink, tea rose pink, lemon yellow or teal for the door. Any thoughts on what will go best with a redbrick house?

Hi AMB, gravel wouldnt be right for the type if house (I'm a bit of a history pedant) , but also the space in front of the house is very tight so I doubt it would be much of a deterrent against modern day rat a tat ginger. I try to use transparency as a deterrent against burglary when I can , so no nets etc, so people can see in, see there's nothing to pinch and go elsewhere. Not sure I'd call the perpetrators scum either. Though burglary is a scummy thing to do that's for sure. I like to think there's redemption for everyone. Apart from people who rip put original features, obviously. They're beyond help.

I vote teal but a neighbour has just painted their front door a pale pink with chrome door furniture and it looks very cool

My sis voted teal too. I liked dusty lilac until she said it was a crystal dangler's colour. Next door is trendy grey/sage. Doesn't help that my hallway is currently a shell and I have no strong ideas about what I'm gonna do there either. lemon yellow or pink seem to carry no hugely negative connotations AFAIK.

je renoverais ma salle de bain. elle est moche mais pas catastrophique. cependant, de mauvaises surprises (fuites et plomberie défectueuse) pendant le confinement m'ont conduite à avancer les travaux rénovation de ma salle de bain. c'est pourtant la dernière pièce que j'envisageais de refaire. c'est prévu pour dans 2 ans max.. entre temps, il y aura des doubles vitrages partout. et dieu sait que j'ai un paquet de baies vitrées !!.. donc 2 gros budgets en perspective. et tout ça sur mesure car l'année de construction de mon appartement date des années 70.

bonjour, ils sont très bien les rideaux que vous avez trouvé, le bleu est bien clair et dans les tons pastels que nous utilisions beaucoup en Scandinavie. Le bleu assortie pour le coussin est parfait. Si vous souhaitez vous rapprocher du style Scandinave il faut choisir entre rideaux et voilage comme on ne mets jamais le deux, beaucoup trop lourd pour nous intérieurs ou on essaye toujours garder une luminosité maximale. En Tunisie vous avez le problème contraire donc il faudra s'adapter et trouver une équilibre entre le style Scandinave et vous besoins. Si vous souhaitez avoir une voilage je conseillerai vivement un blanc uni, sans rayure! votre tableau bleu et jaune sera très bien avec l'ensemble, il est très beau!

Bonjour à toutes et à tous, Merci Perspectives Architecture & Design, je n'avais pas vu votre commentaire. Tous les chantiers sont une histoire en soi...et pourquoi pas, un café en terrasse? Avec plaisir... Et je vous ramène quelques photos complémentaires après que le miroir hacké a été terminé.... rappel des 2 miroirs récupérés d'un chantier de démolition (encadrés de leurs futurs tasseaux formant cadre.) le mur d'origine après peinture et pose sans montants intermédiaires et aujourd'hui (hier) et depuis la terrasse (sans le contre-jour) puis, je vous mettrai quelques détails... bon dimanche!

A dark green would look good or the teal. The pinks may not be so good against the red brick.

I think if you're going with black railings then go for something in keeping with those, so black, dark grey with pewter hardware. I would say anything bright, especially pink may be even more inviting for someone to kick, as unfortunately those that do that kind of thing may be quite drawn to something that really sticks out.

As for a garden path, it's 12 inches , so, maybe one large slab would work better.

Food for thought there. I hadn't thought about the impact on the local asbotterati of bright colours. They kicked my door a lot when I first moved in, possibly because my seller evicted one of their families to sell the place to me, but it hasn't happened recently. Yeah maybe I should keep the exuberance to inside the house.

Sam, is this the same house you were (are?) doing up so nicely with the dark colours and bare brick etc?

For some reason I remember your window frames to be timber, or maybe I'm confused (wouldn't be the first time...).

Hi E D , yes , same house. The windows have been upgraded to timber since I bought it (not shown in photo), but apart from that the exterior is untouched. Indoors looks like this :

Just a thought, if you're going to the trouble of having railings, then you could include a gate that opens outwards, ( I don't think there's room to open inwards ). Then, maybe you could be braver with the outside as the gate will hopefully put the ' asbotterati' off............love that word, must now start using it so I can pretend i'm hip and trendy ...............No, it's not going to work is it?

Hi MATH, The distance from front of bay to the pavement is only a foot or so, but from the front door it's further. Maybe 3' ish. And yes, a railing/gate will present a psychological barrier, if nothing else. Tbh it's a high crime area but most of the burglaries/anti social behaviour tends to happen on the back lanes behind the houses. Communal bins provide handy steps for some kids (and some adult residents sadly) to hop over the 8' brick walls and break in. Having said this high crime for Newcastle is nothing like high crime in London. Property is super cheap (my house was 120k), it's quiet at night, I got a beautiful allotment within 6 weeks of putting my name down and I'm a five minute bike ride to the centre of the city. And if you haven't been to Newcastle, we've got galleries, theatres, a world class concert hall, some cracking architecture and restaurants, incredible coast and countryside all around, and the non-door kicking natives are pathologically friendly. Shame about the weather ;-)

My sister lives in Newcastle ( Jesmond Vale ), she says all the same things, loves it, apart from the cold. However, we're Irish, so she really should be used to it, I still wear my shorts in December, ha ha.

Hi another thought if you don’t paint the outside in your preferred colour paint the inside of the door instead? Maybe a dark grey outside and a pink on the inside?

Gravel helps to put off scum because it's noisy and means they are more likely to be seen or caught. You might want to consider laying it out the front for your path and across your section of the alley.

If your budget allows, I would consider having the paint stripped off as stone should not been painted at all. If it's already been painted then I would paint it all white or off-white and have a brightly coloured door (be brave!) with brass knocker and letterplate etc.

How about planting hedging or a fast growing evergreen climber in front?

Black front door, inside side pink... that gets my vote :-)

There are door bells that have a camera which connects to your phone and it will video (and save if you opt for that, costs a little bit of money each year) and let you know whether there’s someone at the door, even if they don’t ring the bell. We have one. I can see and talk to the people who are on my driveway even when I’m not at home. They are not hugely expensive. But its style is not in keeping with the style of your house, so possibly not for you. Just thought I’d mention it anyway.

You can define the area that it needs to ‘guard’. Not sure how small you can set it to though. Might get a bit annoying if it tells you every time someone walks by the house ;-)

Ours is a Ring. Works well as long as you’ve got a good internet connection.

I was looking at similar doorbells but it wouldn't work that well for us because we have a communal front door.

With regards to the style, they do look a bit 'plasticky'. Are there no better looking ones?

btw C, isn't it annoying when the spelling correction adds an apostrophe incorrectly?

AMB they were monsters. Are you going to replace or live with it? And re those fancy video doorbells, yeah I'm actually hoping to reinstate the victorian bell pull eventually. And as I'm practically on the street it would be hard to restrict the radius. Though I hear they're good if you're away from home and suspect your other half of cheating :-)

Yes Sam. Unfortunately they cannot be salvaged but they will be replaced with a replica Victorian staircase. I'm spending a lot of money putting all the features back in!

Really enjoyed reading the comments on this post Sam. I would paint your front door red, in Feng shui terms the front door is the gateway to good energy going into your home and red signifies luck, richness and luxury. I would also consider planting a really prickly climbing shrub underneath the bay window to help deter those that may wish to share your possessions. Never been to Newcastle but considering a trip now,
