Outside Inside House Pool
Indoor outdoor space to terrace.
The house has been designed with the aim to being ‘timeless’ and to gracefully age. To this end the building form and the type of finishes were carefully considered. Robust materials such as natural stone, copper and slate have been used for their aged patina and for the texture, detail and interest that they provide. The use of these materials has been contrasted with white texture coated walls to add ‘lightness’ to the materials previously stated.
The battle-axe site had a substantial difference in level of over 4m from the western boundary down to the eastern boundary. This difference in level was used to step both the building and the external areas down from west to east and thereby allowing maximum access of the view to the river to the east. The building turns it’s back to the west and south and opens up in an ‘L’ shaped plan form to the east and north. The building thereby respects the neighbours privacy and access to light by the building mass stepping down along the southern boundary. The ’L’ shaped plan form also provided privacy to the ‘view side’ of the building and outdoor areas for the owners of the house, along with protection from the prevailing winds and maximum solar access.
