Julie Moir Messervy Design Studio (JMMDS)For this Boston-area former hunting lodge, featured in Outside the Not So Big House by Julie Moir Messervy and Sarah Susanka, JMMDS created a landscape design that anchors the house in the site and complements its Tuscan-inspired architectural update. An antique openwork wrought-iron gate provides access from the driveway to the courtyard and breaks up the solidity of the stone walls, crafted by an italian stonemason. The winding, informally-planted brick path leads to the back door, in contrast to the formal front entry. Photo: Grey Crawford.

Earthwork Landscape ArchitectsThis lovely gate was made from the back of an old dray which was found on the property when we first moved there 40 years ago. It was restored by my father, who also added a handle fashioned from a horseshoe. The gate leads through to the back courtyard with a crazy paving path. The tantalising view is framed by a spectacular ornamental grape. Rebecca Wilson
Grizzly Iron, IncThese gates and the adjacent railing panels were built new for this house during a large remodel. The finish was sandblasted with a clear sealer which we intentionally left incomplete. This allowed the gates to weather over time and allow the rust to grow in some areas more than others.
