Building a brand based on experience. Peterson has experienced every aspect of the home building business, developing his expertise from the ground up. “I began as a carpenter, then became a builder and started focusing on general contracting and management,” he says. “I love the creativity that comes out when you’re renovating.” Peterson partnered with the Smith & Sons founders and moved to British Columbia seven years ago to further develop the business.
Focusing on client comfort. The Smith & Sons team wants its clients to enjoy the remodeling process as much as possible. “When the realm of discomfort starts for clients, we want to make sure that’s handled as expeditiously as possible,” Peterson says. While everyone can enjoy the creativity of design and the satisfaction of a beautiful finished project, exceptional construction services are key throughout the entire journey. “We’re setting a higher standard by providing peace of mind, security and satisfaction,” Peterson says.

1. Be Patient When It Comes to Planning
It’s tempting to start the ball rolling on your renovation as quickly as possible, but Peterson counsels against moving too fast too soon. “Be prepared to invest in the preliminary stages of a project prior to a building contract,” he says. “Don’t rush into construction without having all the appliances, cabinetry and other items of aesthetic value already selected.”
The impact of this Nanaimo kitchen upgrade is clear, but it took an investment of time early on to prevent chaos during construction. “Kitchens in particular require careful planning and coordination,” Peterson says. “People often underestimate all the moving parts. From the electricians and cabinetmakers to the painters and other suppliers all coming together, it’s one of the most complicated projects in the house.”

2. Dive Deep During the Design Phase
Your carefully planned timeline and precisely allocated budget are most easily disrupted by changes in scope. “Homeowners often struggle to see details during the design phase that they might catch later,” Peterson says. “Virtual tools can really help, so you’ll never have that moment where you realize you should have moved a wall another 6 inches.”
At this Vancouver apartment, the homeowners wanted to replicate the spa-like experience found in a high-end hotel. “During the design phase we talked about all the ways we could blend luxury with functionality,” Peterson says. The result is a sleekly modern space with ample light, wood and stone accents and a deep, freestanding soaking tub that anchors the space.

3. Trust Your Team and the Process
Peterson knows that general contractors don’t have the industry’s best reputation for communication and attention to detail. “We’re filling this industry gap,” he says. “We have the training in place so that our team operates at the highest professional level.” When you’ve hired the best in the business, Peterson recommends trusting the process once construction begins.
“The goal is to not only make the remodeling experience as pleasant as it can be, but to make living in your home as easy and as comfortable as possible,” Peterson says. This Vancouver home had a small footprint but a large amount of space to the left of the structure. “We had room to add a spacious carriage house that would give the homeowners plenty of options as a guest house for retired parents or visiting children, a source of rental income or even just additional storage,” Peterson says.
