Perfect pairing. Conrad and her husband, who both worked in finance, knew very little about cabinetry when they began building a home on the Big Island prior to a move from the mainland. After they experienced issues with cabinet suppliers, their contractor introduced them to his parents, who had a cabinetry business in Texas. The couples hit it off and started their company in Kailua-Kona in 2018. “We combined our passion for design with their cabinetry and contracting experience,” Conrad says.
Bringing visions to life. Conrad says her experience on the homeowner side of the equation makes it gratifying to design spaces for clients and help others navigate the process, from the first steps to the finishing touches. She also understands the common challenges homeowners run into when selecting cabinets to complement their home and lifestyle. The company’s showroom is stocked with samples of paints, countertop materials and flooring so clients can see how they coordinate. “It’s fun to watch how excited people are to see how it comes together,” she says.
Looking for the right cabinets for your own home? Conrad offers some tips on what to think about as you get started.

1. Showcase Your Star Feature
Decide on the focal point of each space and match your other design choices to it. “Select an element you love, which could be exotic flooring, a unique countertop or an unusual cabinet color, and use that as an anchor to build the other elements around,” Conrad says.
The large, multicolored countertop on the island is the centerpiece in this Kailua-Kona kitchen. Conrad chose dark brown cabinets and all-white countertops to play off the colors of the island. “We wanted them to support it, not compete with it,” she says.

2. Put Your Lifestyle First
Think about how you live and what’s important to you when choosing cabinetry that will fit your needs. Conrad tells clients that functionality is key. “We’re just as interested in how clients will utilize the space as we are in how they want it to look,” she says.
This closet in Kailua-Kona has room for everything the homeowners need to store and plenty of organizational features to keep it from becoming messy. The configuration includes rods for hanging clothes, closed cabinets for folded clothing, shelves for shoes and other stacked items and pullout drawers for jewelry and hampers. A light bar running the length of the closet makes it even easier to see what’s inside.

3. Take a Chance on Trends
If you love a popular new look, find ways to add it to your space. “Trends last for 10 years, and that is a long time to enjoy something you love,” Conrad says.
The homeowners at this Kohala Waterfront home had previously turned to Conrad to create cabinetry for their kitchen. They returned to get her advice about swapping in a copper sink. “They loved the trend of mixing metals but worried it would clash with their stainless steel appliances,” Conrad says. After assuring them it would add interest and make the kitchen pop, they took the plunge. “The days of matching everything are gone,” Conrad says.
