PETE NICK DESIGNThis stone staircase has been a particularly interesting challenge to design and build. As the house is a wooden framed build, we could not use traditional building methods to create this outstanding solid stone staircase. We had to allow certain parts of the staircase to be able to move with the potential movement of the wooden frame of the house. That is also a reason why we had to place some additional columns under the curved part of the stone stairs. We believe that these details make this staircase even more interesting to look at.
Century Stair CompanyCentury Stair met the architect's expectations by fabricating and installing a staircase that matched his aesthetic standards and high-end finishes; the clean and crisp zig-zag stringers were created by joining together modules of thick oak risers and nose less oak treads (fixed to the side walls with concealed joinery). A geometrical carpet selected by the owner, with subtle patterns and tones, makes this exquisitely proportioned stair work with the metal balustrade system and the home's elegant and eclectic interior design. Besch Architecturein an effort to maintain the original character of the timber loft, many of the original elements were left in place. This photo shows the original cross bracing that is installed between the floor joist. There are also small metal hooks that were used in the past for old conduit or piping that was part of the original use of the building. A old wall stud that once penetrated the floor system remains but has been cut back to accommodate the new use now. These are the ends of the joist that were cut back when the new two story opening was created for the new staircase.
